How to Add an Additional Place of Business in GST

Check which GST registration covers your new location, prepare the address records, and apply to add an additional place of business.

8 min read

Short answer

To add an additional place of business in GST, first check that the location belongs under the relevant existing registration for the same legal person in the same State or Union Territory. Then use Amendment of Registration Core Fields on the GST portal, enter the premises and activity details, complete verification and submit for approval. Prepare records supporting the address and your right to use it, following the portal's document requests. A location in another State or Union Territory, a different legal person, or an arrangement involving separate registrations needs a separate registration assessment. Last reviewed: October 2026.

When can a location be added to an existing registration?

Start by identifying the legal person operating at the location and the GST registration that covers that business. An additional place may be a shop, office, godown or other business premises. The description should reflect what actually happens there, rather than the name used informally by staff.

For example, a retailer opening a godown in the same State may be able to add it to the relevant existing registration. First check that the same legal person operates both premises and that the godown belongs under that registration. This is an illustrative situation, not a conclusion for every warehouse arrangement.

Choosing the registration route for a new location
SituationWhat to assess
Same legal person and same State or Union TerritoryCheck whether the location should be added to the relevant existing registration as an additional place of business.
Location in another State or Union TerritoryAssess registration requirements there. An additional-place amendment cannot extend an existing registration into another State or Union Territory.
Different legal person or PANAssess registration for the person operating the business. A related business cannot simply use your GSTIN because the owners or trade names overlap.
Separate registrations already existIdentify which registration should cover the location. Do not combine locations without reviewing the existing arrangement.

Separate registration for places within the same State or Union Territory can be available subject to conditions. Equally, opening premises elsewhere does not by itself answer every registration question. Ask your chartered accountant to assess the business activity, supplies and existing registrations before choosing the route.

Which address records should you prepare?

Prepare records that explain both the address and the basis on which the business occupies it. The GST portal's additional-place guidance distinguishes owned premises, rented or leased premises, and premises used with consent. Choose the category that matches the arrangement.

Premises records described in the GST portal guidance
Premises arrangementRecords to prepare
OwnedAn ownership-supporting document, such as a property tax receipt, municipal khata copy or electricity bill.
Rented or leasedA valid rent or lease agreement, together with a document supporting the lessor's ownership, such as a property tax receipt, municipal khata copy or electricity bill.
Used with consent, including shared premisesA consent letter and a document supporting the consenter's ownership, such as a municipal khata copy or electricity bill.

Read the documents together before filing. Can someone match the building, unit, floor and locality to the address you plan to enter? If the agreement and supporting record describe the premises differently, resolve the difference or prepare a clear explanation supported by records.

Keep readable copies of the relevant pages. Check that an agreement or consent actually covers the premises and the business using them. Do not select ownership merely because the owner of the business is related to the property owner. Follow the portal's current upload instructions.

How do you prepare the amendment before signing in?

Make a short premises note before opening the application. This gives the owner, accounts team and authorised signatory the same information to review. It also helps prevent an address from being entered under a familiar but incorrect GSTIN.

  • Confirm the legal name, PAN and GSTIN of the business that will use the premises.
  • Check that the location is within the State or Union Territory covered by that registration.
  • Write the complete address and compare it with the supporting records.
  • Describe the actual activities, such as storage, retail sales or office work.
  • Identify whether the premises are owned, rented, leased or used with consent.
  • Gather the relevant premises records and flag any mismatch for resolution.
  • Confirm who will review the application and who will submit it as authorised signatory.

If the move replaces your principal place rather than adding another location, review the principal-place amendment as well. Adding a new address does not explain what should happen to an old address that the business has stopped using.

How do you submit the additional-place amendment?

An additional-place change within the relevant State or Union Territory is a core amendment and requires tax officer approval. The GST portal's registration guidance describes the following route. Follow the current screen labels if the layout changes.

  1. Sign in to the GST portal for the registration you have checked.
  2. Open Services, then Registration, then Amendment of Registration Core Fields.
  3. Open Additional Places of Business and add the premises. Enter the address, possession details and activities requested by the portal.
  4. Complete the amendment particulars shown on screen and provide supporting documents where requested.
  5. Review the address, selected activities and possession category against your premises note and records.
  6. Complete the verification declaration, select the authorised signatory and enter the required details.
  7. Submit using the signing method applicable to the registration and retain the submission confirmation.

If Add New is disabled, the additional-place guidance says to return to the principal place section, select Yes for having additional places of business, and save before returning. Check this setting rather than repeatedly trying to add the address.

What should you check after approval?

Check that the approved registration details show the intended location correctly. Compare the address with the application and premises records. Keep the approval record and updated registration certificate with the supporting documents so the accounts team can find them together.

Tell the people maintaining business records which registration covers the premises. Review the location details used in billing and stock records with your adviser where relevant. Do not assume that adding an address settles every GST question arising from supplies or stock movements.

What common mistakes should you avoid?

  • Choosing a GSTIN by trade name alone. Check the legal person, PAN and State or Union Territory.
  • Treating an address in another State as an ordinary additional-place amendment. Assess registration requirements separately.
  • Selecting a possession category that does not match the agreement or consent.
  • Preparing only an agreement when the relevant portal guidance also describes supporting ownership records.
  • Assuming every additional place requires the same uploads, or assuming no evidence can be requested.
  • Stopping after saving a draft or submitting, without checking the outcome.
